First released by the United States mint in 1997, the Platinum Eagles were initially available in 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 full ozt (troy ounce) denominations. After a decade, in late 2008, the fractionals were discontinued and only the one ounce remained.
Platinum American Eagle coins are issued annually. They contain 99.95 percent platinum. The one-ounce coin has a face value of $100 (the largest of any U.S. coin), measures 1.287 inches in diameter and weighs 1.0005 troy ounces.
All demonimations of the proof Platinum Eagles carry a yearly design. The bullion Platinum Eagles have the same design from year-to-year. Pacific Rim Trading offers bullion Platinum Eagles.
Although they have been in release since 1997, there have been a few years when no platinum eagles were issued due to an insufficient quantity of blanks.
